Indoor County Shoot 2024 – Longbow County Champs

Deborah, Pip, Pete, Simon, Daniel, Paul and Chris all shot at the Cambridgeshire County Indoor Championships on Sunday 11th February 2024 at One Leisure, St. Ives. The Open Portsmouth shoot is run by Jolly Archers and incorporates the Cambridgeshire Archery Association (CAA) Indoor Championships.

This was the second year the shoot was UK Record Status so this meant official bow inspections and new this year a timer system.

Overall, a brilliant result for the club with lots of medals, last year it was nearly all barebow wins, this year lots of wins from the new longbow camp.

Jolly Archers York Autumn Shoot 2022

Jolly Archers held their Autumn shoot on Sunday 18th September 2022. Paul and Daniel both attended and both shot the York round. This is 72 arrows at 100 yards, then 48 arrows at 80 yards and finally 24 arrows at 60 yards – 144 scoring arrows in total with a maximum score of 1,296. Shorter distance rounds were available – including Herefords and Bristol rounds.

It was a changeable but dry day with a variable breeze coming across the field, felt more at the target end than at the shooting line.

It was good to see a number of longbow archers having a good time where at one point instead of dropping an arrow one of them launched their whole bow across the shooting line which then couldn’t be recovered as it was too far away and it sat there until it was safe to be recovered.

In the end both Paul and Daniel came 2nd in their York categories. Paul missed out on 1st place by just two points and ended with a score of 1038 which allowed him to claim his 1,000 blue rose award badge as the shoot was a UK Record Status event. A York national gents barebow record which was also a Grand Master Bowman score was also recorded on the day by an archer from Kettering with a score of 954 out of 1,296.

A day of many seasons in one day with wind, high humidity, some rain and burning sunshine. All of the Ely Archers team shot the standard Western round of 60 and 50 yards with 5 zone scoring. As with most AGB round competitions we had to shoot 3 arrows at a time, rotate and then shoot the other 3 arrows for the end which can be off putting but also gives you less time for resting.

In the end everyone had good results with Jordan, Paul and Louise all scoring personal bests and new club records.

Jolly Archers Western Wins

Several of Team Ely attended the Jolly Archers Western competition on Sunday 19^th September 2021. Louise, Paul and Mel shot recurve, whilst Jordan shot compound and Daniel shot barebow. All of them shot the standard Western round of 60 yards and 50 yards. Many of the local clubs were in attendance with all types of bows on display.

The weather was good, hardly any wind with just some rain after we first started which lasted about 15 minutes.

Overall Team Ely won 3 first places:

1^st Place Ladies Recurve: Louise (704)

1^st Place Men’s Recurve: Mel (794)

1^st Place Men’s Barebow: Daniel (594)
