Ely Archers First FITA 25 competition

Christmas Jellybow competition

Roy's 3-Rudolf end, with 60 bonus points on these 3 arrows alone!

 

Christmas wouldn't be complete without the traditional Ely Archers Jellybow competition! 

A number of club members braved the wintry conditions to compete in the annual fun event, with bonus points being awarded for hitting a selection of festive graphics.

The winner this year was Roy Lockwood, who ended the competition by shooting a 3-Rudolf end!

Cambs v. Essex Longbow competition

The inaugural Cambs v. Essex Longbow competition was hosted by Ely Archers at the Kings School Sports Hall, Barton Road, Ely, on 29 November 2009. The day was a great success, with a closely-fought competition resulting in a narrow victory for Essex, with their score of 4473 points just beating Cambridgeshire's 4470.  Photos of the day will follow shortly.
 
Ely Archers Second Annual Open Portsmouth competition

We held our second open Portsmouth competition at Littleport Leisure Centre, Camel Road, Littleport, on 22 November 2009The event was sponsored by Aim4Sport, and it was a UK Record Status event. Archers assembled from around East Anglia and beyond to compete.  Lord Paramount and founder member of Ely Archers, Dr Peter Hooper, commented, “Great to see so many faces and wonderfully friendly atmosphere”.  Club Chairman, Andy Bensted, commented, “With all sessions well attended, next year should be even better”.

To name but a few winners, the George Barnsley-Mountford Memorial Cup (Gent’s Double Recurve) was won by Roy Lockwood of Ely Archers; the Team Shield was won by the Jolly Archers; Gents’ Recurve Cup, Roy Lockwood of Ely Archers; Ladies Recurve Plate, Linda Unwin of Jolly Archers; Gents’ Longbow Mug, Dave Slack of Fenland Archers.

Indoor season shooting timesThe Kings School Sports Hall facility, our new winter shooting venue

Ely Archers are now shooting indoors at the Kings School Sports Hall at Barton Road in Ely for the winter season.

Shooting times are on Friday and Wednesday evenings from 6pm onwards and on Sunday mornings from around 9.30am until lunchtime.

Wednesday evenings will be the designated coaching evening, so if you need any help with your shooting style or with setting up any of your archery equipment, please ask Dave, Phil, Maggie, Garry or Sean.

Sunday shooting sessions will have specific rounds arranged, and more details of these will be available on the members area of the website.
 

Mature and Active eventPhil Lenney, Club Secretary, with Richard Spendlove

Ely Archers ran an information stall at the Mature and Active event organised by East Cambs District Council on Thursday 13 August 2009 at the Paradise Sports Field in Ely.  The event was designed to promote interest in a variety of sporting activities particularly for the over-55's.

Ely Archers achieve grant funding

Ely Archers are delighted to have received a grant of £1,500 funded from Cambridgeshire Community Fund which is managed by Cambridgeshire Community Foundation. 

The money has been used to purchase targets, indoor backstop netting, and a slow-motion video camera, all of which will help with coaching beginners to the sport.

Ely Archers host a coaching session for the County Juniors Squad

Ely Archers were pleased to host a coaching session for the County Junior Squad on Sunday 31 May 2009 at the Kings School's Amherst field in Ely, our regular club shooting ground.  Andy Bensted, the County coach who also trains pupils from the Kings School, can be seen in the background of the main picture:

Due to rainy conditions on one evening of our June 2009 beginners course, we ran a quick clout competition - resulting in this superb shot!
 

Ely Archers have moved into Ely!

From April 2009, Ely Archers started shooting at their new summer venue at the Amherst field, belonging to the Kings School in Ely.  The field is located next to Ely railway station. Summer shooting is at the same times, ie on Friday and Wednesday evenings from 6pm and on Sunday afternoons from 2pm.

Ely Archers Success Story from the Cambridge Evening News - 2008

Medals, cups and trophies abound for a trio from Ely Archers. Ely Archers have had an excellent outdoor season competing in Cambridgeshire and surrounding counties, shooting in all sorts of weather.

This year some of the more outstanding trophies gained are:-

Jolly Archers County Trials - Sean Fox  gained 1st place shooting a Long National round.

Fenland Archers- Sean Fox came 1st in the Essex versus Cambs archery competition shooting a York round.

Parkfield Western – Sean Fox was 1st in the compound discipline - Roy (recurve) came 2nd whereas George came 1st and set a county record in the junior gents compound under 16 for the Western round.

Cambridgeshire Archery Association outdoor championships where George Lockwood gained 1st place and the county record in the junior compound under 16 shooting a Bristol II round. Sean Fox came a creditable 2nd shooting a York round.

Both Roy and George were placed 1st in their respected category in the Fenland Archers St George round where George also gained the county record junior gents compound.

City of Cambridge Bowmen – Both Roy and George again came 1st and George set a county record for junior gents compound under 16's.

Jolly Archers annual Western round where George once again gained 1st place.
